Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Arugula & Tomato Jam
When I spotted the Sweet & Savory Tomato Spread (jam, really) in the new items section at Trader Joe’s I had one immediate thought: Grilled Cheese Sandwich. So that’s just what I did.
This grilled cheese sandwich hits both the sweet and savory marks with all the gooey melty cheese and buttery bread you crave in a perfect grilled cheese sandwich. The arugula adds a gorgeous peppery kick while the zesty mustard offsets the sweetness of the tomato jam. Perfectly balanced and ready in minutes; is it lunchtime yet?

Grilled Cheese Sandwich Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 4 slices multigrain bread (like Dave’s Killer Bread)
- 3-4 slices sharp cheddar cheese (or Gouda works well too)
- 2 tablespoons Trader Joe’s Tomato Spread
- 2 tablespoons dijon mustard
- 2 small handfuls arugula
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
Spread tomato jam onto one side of each of two slices of bread. Spread mustard onto one side of the other two slices.
Step 2
Layer the cheese slices and arugula onto the slice of bread with tomato jam and top with the mustard slice.
Step 3
Add half the butter to a large skillet and heat over medium-low heat until butter is mostly melted. Add the sandwiches to the pan and use a spatula to move them around and ensure even distribution of butter.
Step 4
When the first side is browned add the remaining butter, flip grilled cheese sandwiches, and continue cooking until the cheese is fully melted and second side is browned. Once browned remove from pan, cut on the diagonal, and serve.
