You Need A Shower Head Filter: Here’s Why

Haircare, highlights, balayage, salon, healthy hair, haircare tips, shower filter, hard water

One thing is for sure… coloring our hair does a number on it and if you have even so much as thought about changing your hair color, then you need a Shower Head Filter.

I have very long hair and a ton of it (I know how lucky I am, no need to roll your eyes). But my hair has a good amount of warmth in the undertones which means one thing… Yup, you guessed it: BRASS. Ugghh.

It’s not pretty and certainly not the look any of us blondes are after. It’s a battle I’ve waged for years. Get my hair colored, looks fresh as hell for about 2 weeks then starts to change to what can only be called “blorange.”

So what’s a Southern California girl to do? Avoid the sun altogether? Stop heat-styling my hair and rock a sad attempt at beach hair around the office?

No way. Not this girl. So I set out on a quest to find the best products to combat the brassiness and orange undertones; and while I found a few, which I cover in separate posts, nothing quite did the trick.

I wasn’t addressing the real source of the issue. Did you catch that I live in Southern California? Thought so.

Like many metropolitan cities, SoCal cities like LA and San Diego have heavily treated, extremely hard WATER. In fact, Southern California has some of the hardest water in the country.

Every time you wash your hair, you are exposing it to a variety of minerals that, while not harmful to our health (or so they say), can wreak havoc on our hair.

These minerals combine with our natural oils to cause a greasy, sticky feeling at the scalp. Then, this mineral buildup prevents even the best conditioner from penetrating the hair, leaving your ends dry and brittle.

To compound the problem, if you color your hair, hard water actually creates the brassy look we all spend major bucks to avoid. Additionally, the added chlorine in our water strips away our hair color leaving it looking worn out and lifeless.

So now you know why you need a shower head filter, but which one should you choose?

There are several varieties of Shower Head Filters available at varying price points but, luckily for us, in this product category price does not necessarily correlate with quality. My favorite pick is one of the less expensive options actually.

The AquaBliss SF100 will run you about $35 on Amazon. And let me tell you, it is worth that and more. It features 12 filtration stages and removes not only chlorine but other sediments, limescale, and a host of other impurities.

Additionally, it features ceramic and tourmaline to infuse the water with hair and skin-pampering minerals and vitamin C – bonus!

This filter has had the biggest impact on my hair by a long shot. As an added benefit, my skin is softer and I don’t feel like I need to run to the lotion bottle immediately after I get out of the shower (you know that skin-is-cracking feeling).

The AquaBliss SF100 is super easy to install and only takes a few minutes. Just follow the instructions on the box. The filter will last you anywhere from 4-6 months depending on how many showers are taken per day.

Get one… like yesterday. Your hair and skin will thank you. Your stylist may not, but hey we can’t please everyone. Less visits to the salon and fewer bottles of messy purple shampoo = $$ in your pocket.

Happy showering friends.
