Seductive Passion Fruit Cocktail
This Passion Fruit Cocktail takes what you love from a traditional Mai Tai and slims it down for a lightened version you won’t be able to resist.
Mai Tai recipes typically include a variety of fruit juices and a lot of them. When creating a skinny version I wanted to capture the juiciness we’ve come to love in a Mai Tai, but without all the sugar. While a Passion Fruit cocktail isn’t a new concept, (and passion fruit juice is often used in Mai Tai recipes) a skinny Passion Fruit cocktail just might be.
This took several iterations and a willing husband as a guinea pig, but I finally got it just right. ???????? The result? An easy, refreshing, low-sugar Passion Fruit cocktail that goes down a little too easy. Cheers!

Passion Fruit Cocktail Ingredients
- 1 oz (1 part) passion fruit juice
- 1 oz (1 part) orange juice
- 4 oz (1/2 cup) sparkling water (see note)
- 2 oz (2 parts) dark rum (see note)
- 1 lime, sliced into wedges
- ice cubes
Cook’s Notes:
Passion Fruit: I used fresh Passion Fruit in this cocktail recipe because I had several on hand from a neighbor. Passion Fruit juice or nectar will work perfectly as well.
Sparkling Water: I prefer LaCroix Coconut flavored sparkling water in this passion fruit cocktail but unflavored, lime, or orange would work well here also.
Rum: my favorite brand of rum is Koloa from Kauai. I use the Koloa Dark Rum here, but any dark rum would be delicious. You could also use coconut rum if you prefer.
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
If using fresh Passion Fruit: cut the top from the fruit and scoop the pulp, seeds, and juice into a strainer over a small bowl. Gently press the pulp and seeds into the strainer to ensure all juice is released. Repeat as necessary.
Step 2
Fill a cocktail glass with ice. This cocktail will be made with a layered effect, as seen in the photo. This may also be made in a shaker and poured over ice.
Step 3
Add passion fruit and orange juices to glass. Slowly pour sparkling water into glass to avoid mixing with the juices.
Step 4
Using the back of a spoon, slowly pour rum over spoon into glass of ice, water, and juices, allowing it to float on the top. Garnish glass with a lime wedge and a straw for stirring.
